Drive Me: Robotic Drivers & Re-Inventing the Wheel

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Driving is the next human-led activity where robots will soon take the wheel, literally. If current trends continue, your car will drive you, guided by a computer and streams of data from the GPS, cameras, sensors and lasers. You'll summon your car, climb in back, and be whisked to your destination which could be four blocks away or on the other side of the continent. But that’s just the beginning.
Self-driving cars will induce a cascade of changes in the way we live and work. On highways, computer-guided swarms of self-driven trucks and cars will efficiently stream past lane closures and accidents -- no more traffic jams and less smog. Parking lots will disappear as cars whisk themselves off to remote warehouses to park and await their next summons. Roadside billboards will be replaced by location-sensitive sponsored ads and coupons. On the dark side, your loyal car could be hacked to steer you off course.
Cars will be the next mobile robots. What then?
